Each January, the Newark Chapter of Alpha Phi Alpha hosts a county-wide "Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Oratorical Contest," featuring 7th and 8th grade young men from the greater Newark community. This year's essay topic was Martin Luther King Jr.'s perspective on the world today.  Hundreds of applicants applied for this contests and two of our Aquinas Academy 7th graders placed and were invited to speak at a luncheon to reveive their awards.  Congratulations to Joaquin Suriel for placing 3rd and Johnnie Brooker for placing 4th!

The 2015 UNICO Columbus Day Essay Contest winners are shown below.  Unico is an Italian-American Service Organization that sponsors this essay contest every year. Students write an essay describing how Christopher Columbus has inspired them and UNICO recognizes four Aquinas Academy 5th graders for their excellent essays.  Each of the four students receives a plaque recognizing their achievement and they are also honored by having their essays displayed in the Livingston Library for the remainder of the month of October.

Congratulations to this year's winners: Katie Dusko (1st place), Robert McClammy (2nd place), Devin Hamilton (3rd place) and Alexandra Jefferson (4th place).

Each year, the Unico National Sportsmanship Award is presented annuallly to two Aquinas Academy students. The award is presented by Unico National's Livingston Chapter to deserving student athletes of the Livingston middle schools' interscholastic sports program in recognition of his or her diligence and efforts to bring integrity, character, pride, and spirit to the team and to the school. Pictured below are Reigne Villanueva and Blake Hamilton, who were also honored by Congressman Rodney Frelinghuysen with a United States House of Representatives Citation for their outstanding sportsmanship. Congratulations to both Reigne and Blake on this well-deserved achievement.
